I am always very inspired by this area of coastline in Normandy ( next to Omaha Beach) and have already done some exercises on it. Here I focussed on the reflection of the rocks in the water. But this is quite difficult for me and probably needs more practice. The sky has also become quite patchy (including a second colour application with an attempt at correction).

I like the composition and the way that you handled the values and the shadows. The photo is of a much brighter day and I wonder if putting brighter blues in the water and sky will make it stand out a bit more.
I really like your cliffs, Beri. The dry brush work gives a nice texture to them. The reflections are subtle with sufficient definition and blend nicely with the rocks and seaweed in the foreground. The background gives nice distance and perspective to the whole composition. Always a temptation, (I’m sure we’ve all been there), to go back into the sky when it drys lighter than expected. Sometimes just east to accept how it has turned out and remember for the next painting.
Lovely work! With a significant interest in D-Day, I have a visit to the beaches on my shortlist, and it's nice to see your painting of the area. Yes, the sky could be a little fresher, but it still works well, and what I particularly like is that you've kept the reflections nice and quiet so they don't compete with detail on the foreshore. Well done!
Yes going in a second time always feels frustrating. Always use a stronger mix than you imagine as it will lighten when drying. Other than that there is a lovely impressionistic feeling in your painting, a combination of the deep shadows, reflections and dry brushwork. I'm excited to see more of your work.
Really nice! The design is very good, an improvement on an already fine photo. I like the way you tightened up the rocks between the cliffs and the ocean. It gives it more punch, and forcing the perspective of the cliffs also makes the painting stronger and more dramatic. Seaweed etc. all work well as does the aerial perspective out to the distant headland. Those reflected cliffs are hard to do well, so bravo.
If I were to change anything it would be to make the sky cloudless, more like the photo, a fine graded wash -- strong cobalt blue to a thin cerulean above those warm low clouds at the horizon -- which better corresponds to the clean shadows you've drawn.
Anyway, good work.
